The Apollo Orchestra, Stephen Czarkowski Music Director, is pleased to announce the opening concert of its 8th season with a Celebration of the centennial of Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990). Bernstein’s contributions to the music of Stage, Screen, and Concert Hall have earned him a well-deserved place among the greatest musical geniuses of the 20th century. The Apollo Orchestra begins this concert with Bernstein’s ever-popular, raucously ribald Overture to Candide. Next we present the darkly gritty musical suite from the 1954 film score to On the Waterfront, starring Marlon Brando, Karl Malden, and Rod Steiger. From the crime and corruption of the New Jersey docks, we travel across the Hudson River to the tumultuous streets of NYC, where love and tenderness still triumph over all. The Symphonic Dance Music from West Side Story reveals some of the greatest and most enduring music Bernstein ever wrote. Finally, joining the orchestra for his third appearance is the extraordinary violin virtuoso, Cho-Liang Lin. Mr. Lin will close the concert with the Serenade, after Plato’s Symposium, a five movement concerto praising different aspects of love.
